New menu from Paço dos Cunhas is a tribute to the summer in Santar

20/09/2022

Located in a 17th century manor property, in the noble village of Santar, the Paço dos Cunhas restaurant is an icon of the gastronomic culture of the Dão-Lafões region, in the district of Viseu. Living up to its reputation as a fine dining space, Chef Henrique Ferreira and his team designed a letter for the summer that pays homage to Beira cuisine and the traditions of Santar, in a reinterpretation of traditional Portuguese cuisine that results in surprising dishes, where Past and present intersect unexpectedly.

«We wanted to pay homage to the people and traditions of Santar, reinterpreting some of the classics of Portuguese cuisine, as well as the regional recipes, respecting the products and local and seasonal ingredients, such as the heart of the bull tomato, the green beans, the loquats and even violets, so typical at this time. More than just an enogastronomic experience, we want the visit to Paço dos Cunhas to be a journey through the flavors and stories kept over time in this unique village», says Chef Henrique Ferreira, responsible for the cuisine of this emblematic gastronomy space in the heart of the city of the Dão.

The choices start with the starters, where the tributes to traditional dishes of this season stand out, with reinventions of the summertime Sardinhas Assadas com Pimentos, Peixinhos da Horta or Bifana no Pão, tributes to the typical snacks of popular summer gatherings. In terms of fish, you can see the Pasta Fresca de Lingueirão à Bolhão Pato, the Arroz Caldoso de Polvo, or the Fish Stew from Nossa Costa. The work of reinventing ancestral recipes is also present in meat, where dishes that revive old flavors such as Chicken from Campo de Fricassé, Pork Belly with Beetroot and Cabbage or Steak with Onion.

The desserts respect Portuguese recipes, telling stories of their own, such as “Ananás, Violetas e Moscatel, where the fruit of the Azores is worked with muscatel and finished with a crunchy violet, recalling the colors and aromas of the streets of Santar in summer; the Loquat and Chocolate Burnt Cream, with the loquats gathered in the backyard; or the Golden Soup French Toast, inspired by a Portuguese sweets classic.

There are many more options, either à la carte or in three tasting menus proposed by the Chef: the Origins menu (€27.50, or €36.50 with harmonization), the Santar menu (€35.00, or €50, €00) and the Do Chef menu (€57.50, or €82.50). The tasting menus have the option of pairing with the best wines from the 1990 Premium Wines portfolio, from the brands Casa de Santar, Vinha dos Amores, Encontro or Saturno, whose selection can be advised by the sommelier and head chef, André João.

Finally, a reference to the famous Corn Bread that is offered at the beginning of the meal, mashed and cooked in the kitchen at Paço dos Cunhas. The story goes that, in ancient times, cinnamon and sugar were added to the leftover dough and sweet breads were made for the children on their way home from school – the same Sweet Bread that is also present on the menu, accompanying the coffee, as well as such as the Farturas from Feira de S. Mateus and the Cavacas from Resende, in versions reinvented here.

«Paço dos Cunhas is one of our most charismatic wine tourism spaces, where we combine fine dining with our terroir wines, produced in the vineyards of Dão, Bairrada and Alentejo. The new menu, prepared by Chefs Henrique Ferreira and Alberto Correia, makes our enogastronomic experiences even more exclusive and special», says Vítor Castanheira, CEO of 1990 Premium Wines, the company that owns Paço dos Cunhas.

The new menu for the Paço dos Cunhas restaurant will be available until next October and reservations can be made by calling 232 945 452 or by emailing reservas.santar@1990.pt. The Paço dos Cunhas restaurant is open from Tuesday to Thursday for lunch, from 12:00 to 15:00; Fridays and Saturdays, lunch and dinner, from 12:00 to 15:00 and from 19:00 to 22:00; and Sundays for lunch, from 12:00 to 16:00.

New harvest of Dona Fátima launched

20/09/2022

The new harvest of the only white wine in the world produced from grapes of the almost extinct Jampal variety, Dona Fátima 2021 has arrived on the market. With the signature of the winemaker Ricardo Noronha, this wine from the Lisbon region translates the spirit of Manzwine like no other and puts the small and historic village of Cheleiros on the map.

Dona Fátima is clearly a wine of passion. Its origin dates back to 2005, when the Manz family settled in the quiet village of Cheleiros. With the charter of Dom Sancho I in 1195, the current parish of the municipality of Mafra has lost importance and dimension throughout history. Manzwine changed this route and put the land mentioned in the José Saramago Convent Memorial once again on the map. The uniqueness of Dona Fátima continues in 2021, with a new edition keeping alive the almost extinct Jampal grape.

The mentor of this very particular white, André Manz, collaborates with the winemaker Ricardo Noronha. The result «is the continuation of an extraordinary wine, which is also a clear example of the wealth that Portugal has in terms of wine heritage». The various editions of Dona Fátima launched since 2010 have found great receptivity in Portugal and abroad, with productions systematically sold out. The quality and characteristics of this icon of the Lisbon Region are inseparable from the fact that it is the only white wine in the world made from Jampal grapes. An almost accidental discovery that was validated by researchers from the Instituto do Vinho e da Vinha.

The Jampal variety was abandoned due to the high cost of production and care that the vineyard required. The connection to Cheleiros is thus a point of departure and arrival. The presence of Manzwine is unavoidable in the historic center of the town, not only because this is where the winery is located, but also as a result of the great commitment to the rehabilitation of the local heritage. The restoration of several buildings, including the old primary school, is visible and invites a visit. In this field, a highlight is the museum center where an ancient mechanical mill transports us to a journey through time where wine is king and lord.

José Maria da Fonseca launches luxury moscatel

20/09/2022

60 years after the two most important international achievements of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Garrafeira Benfica launches on the market, in pre-sale, the Moscatel of José Maria da Fonseca, from the years of victories, 1961 and 1962, to celebrate the six decades of the second European championship of the club da Luz, for the value of 6162 thousand euros. Through the consultancy of Martins Wine Advisor, with Vinha.pt, this launch brings together the renowned winery company from Setúbal to the stylist Nuno Gama, who was responsible for the design of the label, as well as the special packaging that holds the wine.

The first 20 buyers of this edition are automatically invited to be present at the launch of the wine, on September 4, at a dinner with members of the SLB board, with the administrator of José Maria da Fonseca, António Maria Soares Franco, the stylist Nuno Gama, the CEO of Martins Wine Advisor, Cláudio Martins, and old glories of Clube da Luz. The José Maria da Fonseca Moscatel can be purchased in stores and online at Garrafeira Benfica, on viña.pt and through Martins Wine Advisor and José Maria da Fonseca. «It is a reason for great satisfaction to be able to add in this very limited edition and allusive to two of the greatest achievements in our sporting history, so illustrious, distinct and recognized entities and personalities. The combination of Sport Lisboa e Benfica by Martins Wine Advisor, José Maria da Fonseca and Nuno Gama, with two liqueur products with 60 years of life each, constitutes in itself something unique and distinct embodied in this very limited and excellent edition. », underlines Miguel Bento, commercial and marketing director of SLB.

The muscatel from 1961 and 1962, years of SLB’s European victories, pays tribute not only to the club and its fans, but is, at the same time, «a premium, rare, exclusive and unprecedented product, which makes it a good for investment, with great potential for economic growth», says Cláudio Martins, CEO of Martins Wine Advisor. «Although it is a wine with the SLB brand, it is, above all, a unique wine, which interests wine collectors and investors, wine connoisseurs in general», he concludes. For António Maria Soares Franco, «José Maria da Fonseca, as the owner of a unique heritage of Moscatel de Setúbal wines, has the greatest honor to be associated with remarkable moments, such as the celebration of the sixty years of the SLB European Championship. ». «We believe that these Moscatel de Setúbal wines from 1961 and 1962 will have fans not only with SLB supporters, but also with all those who appreciate rare wines with a high potential for appreciation», he adds.

The stylist Nuno Gama understands that this edition is a tribute to what «they always crave more». «I was blessed by Azeitão, by the Arrábida mountain range, by my grandmother’s Tortas recipe and by Moscatel, among many others. They are part of who I am and where I am going. This challenge arises from this origin and the excellence of what I was taught. 60 years ago a group of men surpassed themselves and surprised the world by bringing the cup with them. 60 years ago, and without knowing it, this nectar was also reserved to commemorate the 60th anniversary of this feat. And it was from here that we created the concept of this commemorative edition in honor of those who always aim for more», he concludes. Created in December 2021, Garrafeira Benfica is available not only to members but also to the general public. The project that was born from the club’s partnership with viña.pt brings together a selection of the best national and international wines, duly personalized with the image of the Luz club. Garrafeira Benfica is available online at slbenfica.pt/loja/garrafeira and at the Club’s Official Stores – Estádio, Colombo, Baixa (Jardim do Regedor), Strada and MAR Shopping.

Quinta de Naples opens its doors to wine tourists and receives competition from the Tomate Coração de Boi Festival

20/09/2022

Quinta de Naples, owned by the Niepoort family, is one of the oldest properties in the Douro demarcated region and has just opened its doors to the public. Wine enthusiasts can now take guided tours of the property that include lunch with the team and a visit to the cellar where all the brand’s Port and Douro DOC wine references are produced. This project thus reinforces Niepoort’s strong commitment to this aspect of wine tourism, which began with the opening to the public of Caves Serpa Pinto, Niepoort’s cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, and one of the ex-libris of the project.

Quinta de Naples, located on the left bank of the Tedo River, presents the ideal conditions for the production of fresh, elegant DOC table wines with an extraordinary aromatic complexity. It works as an important meeting, tasting and sharing center with other consumers and producers around the world. It is equipped with a fully modern cellar and with generous cellars for aging in vats, barrels, stainless steel and clay. Those who visit this Quinta in the Douro can enjoy lunch with the team at ‘This is not a restaurant’, which as the name implies proposes an informal and irreverent experience, which provides lunch with the workers, accompanied by homemade flavors and references. of the brand produced in different regions of Portugal, on a porch overlooking the Douro valley and its terraces of schist and wood. «A visit to Quinta de Naples provides a journey through Portugal, getting to know the best that our oenology team has developed in the main national wine regions and the philosophy that guides the Niepoort house, quality and irreverence», explains Beatriz Machado, director of Niepoort’s Marketing and Tourism department.

Niepoort’s wine tourism thus includes different programs for different audiences and occasions, with the thread of a privileged and unique wine experience in the country and in the world. These programs can be experienced at Quinta de Naples and at the Niepoort cellars, in Vila Nova de Gaia, the latter with 180 years dedicated to Port Wine. Serpa Pinto is the ‘guardian of knowledge’ that has been passed from generation to generation: a magical place, where wines age at the speed of other times, and where some of Niepoort’s most iconic references come from.

In this Serpa Pinto space, there are three visit options. The Niepoortland program suggests a visit and tasting of four wines, not only from the Douro, but also from other wine regions such as Dão, Bairrada and Porto, where the renowned Niepoort develops projects. The Visit and Tasting of six Niepoort wines, from the different national wine regions, lasts an hour and a half and is one of the wine tourism experiences that allows traveling through the different demarcated regions of Portugal and getting to know the different styles and terroirs worked by the winemakers. from Niepoort. As long as it is held by appointment, the most curious can also participate in a masterclass with a tasting of eighteen wines, the Niepoort Master, lasting three hours, where there is space to learn «everything you need to know about Portuguese wine», reinforces Beatriz Machado. “One of the mottos of our family – and brand – is to think outside the box. The opening to visits at Quinta de Naples and at the Serpa Pinto Cellars symbolize the ‘new time’ to which we have dedicated ourselves at Niepoort. At the same time, we are focused on renewal, bringing new ways of thinking about wine tourism and the devotion to wine, but there are things that we will not change, such as the cellars that have remained unchanged since my grandfather’s time, and which are a unique space in the country (and even in the world)», explains Daniel Niepoort, son of Dirk Niepoort and sixth generation of the family.

As part of the wine tourism sector, Niepoort is hosting this year’s edition of the Festival Tomate-Coração-de-Boi at Quinta de Naples. The beef heart tomato is the most anticipated product of the season, celebrated with a series of initiatives throughout the region. The Douro Tomato-Coração-de-Boi Festival returns, after two years of interruption, to Quinta de Naples on August 26, the first day of the initiative that is in its seventh edition. Quinta de Naples will host a panel of chefs, winemakers, journalists and other actors in the field of gastronomy who are part of the jury of the competition that rewards the best tomato producer of the season.

The event continues the following day, August 27, next to the chapel of Arroios, in Vila Real, with the tasting and sale of what is considered one of the best tomatoes in the world.

This experience consolidates the brand’s commitment to a varied wine tourism offer, both internally and with external partnerships, guaranteeing a dynamic program that can include festivals, concerts, collaborations with artists from various areas, among several other experiences.

At Niepoort, vineyards, wine and history are celebrated in a 360º artistic approach.
